About Us
About UsThe Kisakye Children’s Trust, a non-faith-based organisation, was established in the United Kingdom as a charity in 2005 and has four trustees. “Kisakye” means “grace” in Luganda which is the most widely-spoken Ugandan language. The objects of the Trust are the relief of poverty, suffering and distress of people in Africa, including providing such relief through paediatric services for children who are HIV positive. The Trust’s Mission Statement states : Kisakye Children’s Trust supplements and strengthens local services for children in the areas of greatest need, to prevent transmission of HIV and to provide child-centred services in hospital, clinic and home-based care. In London, the Trustees have the support of consultant physicians who are specialists in HIV/AIDS, and patrons include the singer Annie Lennox, actress Emma Thompson and the presenter and journalist Jon Snow. The Trustees are also supported in Mbale, Uganda by leading consultant paediatricians who form part of their steering advisory committee. They are Drs Tegu, Ojoome and Engoru. They are also advised by Dr Peter Olupot from Mbale General Hospital. For its first project the Trust intends to operate a paediatric-HIV hospital/treatment centre in Mbale, eastern Uganda on land which it purchased in the centre of Mbale in September 2007. The hospital, to be known as the Kisa Children’s Centre, will be the first of its kind in the eastern and north-eastern regions of the country. |
